In 2008 and 2009, a national professional learning program for teachers in consumer and financial literacy was implemented in partnership with the Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and states and territories through the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme.

All state and territory education jurisdictions made a commitment to integrate and teach consumer and financial literacy through English, mathematics, science, information and communication technology and studies of society and environment.

A national Roundtable was convened by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission in June 2009 to:

• review the effectiveness of the financial literacy professional learning in their jurisdictions in 2008–09;
• share successes and examples of good practice that could be showcased including Indigenous schools; and
• identify key challenges and opportunities for advancing financial literacy teaching and learning in schools in 2009 and beyond.

All education jurisdictions and sectors were represented at this Roundtable.
